Below are a few of the ghostly tales from around the fort and details on how you can take part in our Paranormal Events!
The Builders Wife
May 1854, A group of builders and some of their wives who were living at the fort employed in the construction were on a day trip to Lymington, returning on a small sail boat in a state of intoxication a couple of the builders had a playful tussle over the keg of beer on board the boat resulting in the boat capsizing. 15 people were on board, seven were drowned. It is said the ghost of one of the builders roams the woods looking for his wife who was also lost that day.
October 1896 - An inquest was held in one of the rooms at Fort Victoria as a body of an unknown man was found floating in the water, it was brought ashore at the Forts Pier, In a state of advanced decomposition it was believed to be of a man about 48 years of age and from its clothing it was deduced he was a master of a coasting vessel, he had a souwester tied on and a life belt under his arms. The local police Seargent had searched the body, finding only a small purse containing 18 shillings and a small knife in his pocket, nothing bore any identifying marks. The remains of this unfortunate man were interred at Freshwater Cemetery in an unmarked grave. The ghost of our unfortunate fisherman is said to haunt the east casemates (the Reptilarium) and old moat area forever trapped where he last came ashore.
One of the most frequently encountered spirits is that of a ghost of a soldier forever doing a patrol of the grounds, we have two recorded incidents of soldiers that met a tragic demise, is this entity one of these men?
